How to Build a Simple Wooden Birdhouse
Construct a durable and welcoming wooden birdhouse to attract local birds to your garden. This project uses basic carpentry skills to create a safe nesting environment for small avian visitors.

Measure and mark the wood
15 minutesMeasure and mark your wood board into six pieces: base, front, back, two sides, and a roof.
Use a tape measure to ensure the pieces will fit together correctly. Consistent measurements are key to a sturdy structure that seals out rain.
Use a square to ensure your cut lines are perfectly perpendicular to the edge.

Cut the wood pieces
30 minutesCut the board along your marked lines using a saw.
Support the wood firmly on a stable surface while cutting. Take your time to follow the lines accurately for a tight fit during assembly.
Ensure fingers are kept well away from the path of the saw blade.
Label each piece with a pencil after cutting so you don't get them confused.

Drill the entrance hole
10 minutesDrill an entrance hole in the center of the front panel using a spade bit.
The size of the hole determines which birds will nest in your house. A 1.5-inch hole is standard for many common backyard birds like bluebirds.
Place a piece of scrap wood underneath the front panel while drilling to prevent the wood from splintering on the exit side.

Sand the edges
10 minutesSmooth all cut edges and the interior of the entrance hole with sandpaper.
Removing splinters protects the birds from injury when entering or exiting the nest. It also makes the pieces fit together more seamlessly.
Fold the sandpaper into a small square to get into tight corners.

Assemble the walls
20 minutesAttach the side panels to the back panel using exterior-grade nails and a hammer.
Apply a bead of wood glue along the edges before nailing for added structural integrity. Ensure the back panel is flush with the sides.
Watch your fingers when hammering to avoid accidental injury.
Pre-drill tiny pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting when you drive the nails.

Attach the front and base
15 minutesSecure the front panel to the sides, then attach the base.
Ensure the base has small holes drilled in the corners for drainage. This keeps the nest dry during heavy rain.
Leave the base slightly recessed so water runs off the sides rather than into the joints.

Install the roof
10 minutesNail the roof piece to the top of the assembly.
Ensure the roof has an overhang to protect the entrance hole from rain. You may want to angle the roof slightly to encourage water runoff.
Use a hinge on one side of the roof instead of nails if you want to be able to open the house for cleaning later.
Pro Tips
- โUse cedar or cypress wood as they are naturally rot-resistant.
- โDo not paint or stain the inside of the birdhouse, as fumes can be toxic to birds.
- โMount the birdhouse at least 5 to 10 feet off the ground to protect from predators.
- โAvoid adding a perch; predators can use them to gain access to the nest.
- โClean out old nesting material annually to prevent parasites.
